SINCE his return to Waverley in December, PC Jim Lavery has been tackling alcohol-related disorder head on.

PC Lavery, who was the neighbourhood specialist officer for the Farncombe area before leaving for a brief spell with Lincolnshire Police, has embraced his new role as youth intervention officer back with Surrey Police.

This involves working with young people, partner agencies, schools and families towards reducing the number of young people entering the criminal justice system.

“It’s a really busy role and it requires having to deal with many agencies and an endless variety of situations,” he said.

“Myself and PCSO Trevor Ward are assisting neighbourhood teams in engaging with families and young people and offering support, where required.

“We are determined to become experts in effectively dealing with youth-related matters within Waverley.”

The focus of PC Lavery’s role is on early intervention, education and mentoring young people, in the hope that through good advice they will avoid entering the criminal justice system or being arrested.

To achieve this, he is using measures such as ‘restorative justice’, which impress on the youngsters how their actions can affect people.

“Measures include making them aware of the consequences of their actions, through letters of apology or mentoring sessions.

“We are available to assist schools in dealing with delicate situations and able to offer advice or input where required.

“We are also always on hand to assist our neighbourhood officer colleagues in dealing with youth-related matters.”

One of his next strategies is to reduce disorder in the parks and public areas of Waverley during the spring and summer.

PC Lavery works in partnership with education welfare on truancy patrols, as well as working with the Youth Justice Service’s ‘prevent and deter’ team.

He also works with Waverley Borough Council to organise the Junior Citizen scheme, offering safety awareness sessions for young people in most of the borough’s junior schools.

Joint programmes with the Royal Navy, the Send Prison visit programme and Surrey Drug and Alcohol Care are also being developed.

He added: “I am very interested in being contacted by any organisation or individual who could offer some assistance in activities which could benefit young people in steering them away from crime or antisocial behaviour.”

In the current freezing temperatures it is important to keep warm during the day and night, particularly for vulnerable people such as the elderly, young and ill. Get some practical help and advice.

Lend a hand

Many older people will be unable to venture outside and will be feeling lonely and isolated. Looking in on an elderly neighbour can really make their day and while many will just be glad of a friendly face, others may benefit from some of the more practical tips below:

Keep warm during the day

The NHS advises that you keep your home at the recommended temperature of 18 to 21°C (64 to 70°F). If you cannot heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before you go to sleep

Close curtains and keep the doors to rooms shut. Leaving them open means your heating system has to work harder and will cost you more.

Have a regular hot meal and hot drinks for warmth and energy

Keep active indoors by carrying out physical activity such as housework, which will warm you up and get your circulation going. If you have difficulty walking, moving your arms and legs and wiggling your toes and fingers will help

Wear several layers of thinner clothes, which trap the warm air between them, – this will keep you warmer than one thick jumper. Clothes made of wool, cotton or fleecy synthetic fibres are usually warmer

Thermal underwear, thick tights, long socks and warm slippers can help beat the chill. If you are sitting down, a shawl and a blanket will provide a lot of warmth

Keeping warm at night

Try to keep your bedroom temperature above 18°C (65°F)

Use a hot water bottle or an electric blanket to warm your bed – but never use the two together

If using an electric blanket make sure you follow the instructions for use

Thermal underwear, pyjamas, bed socks and a nightcap can keep out the cold, as can a warm milky drink before bed. Keeping a flask of hot drink by your bed can also be useful if you wake up feeling cold.

Helping friends, relatives and neighbours

If you know or suspect that the cost of heating bills are a problem for your friend, relative or neighbour, so that they only have to heat one room and can sleep in comfort, they might welcome the offer of you moving their bed temporarily into their living room.

Other offers of help could include:

Buying shopping

Cooking a meal

Clearing pathways

Taking out rubbish

Walking a dog

If you feel safe to do so, offering to take them to a medical appointment.

Practical tips for your house or flat

Avoiding frozen pipes and using your heating system can save you money and keep you warm. Download some useful tips about frozen pipes and using your heating system efficiently.

Today (1st October 2010) Southern Housing Group Limited amalgamated with two of its subsidiaries, James Butcher Housing Association Limited and South Wight Housing Association Limited, to create a single housing association, Southern Housing Group Limited.

The Group’s private development company, Southern Space Limited and marketing arm, Southern Home Ownership Limited, remain subsidiaries of the amalgamated Group.

The amalgamation will result in the creation of two new regions alongside the Group‚Äôs existing regions (London, South and Thames Gateway): the Isle of Wight region (led by new Regional Director, Paul Cotton), and the West region, encompassing the Group’s properties along the M4 corridor and part of the South Coast, led by new Regional Director, Troy Francis.

A key part of the amalgamation is the establishment of Resident Service Panels for each region. These Panels extend the Group’s existing opportunities for resident involvement and will be fully integrated within the Group’s governance structure. They will be responsible for monitoring and shaping arrangements for the delivery of services to residents in their region and helping to plan improvements.

Marking the amalgamation, Southern Housing Group’s Chief Executive, Tom Dacey, said:

“This is a positive step for Southern Housing Group; our new structure means that residents will have greater opportunities to have a say in how local services are delivered, through new ways to become involved . Our simplified structure will also enable us to make further economies of scale across our geographic spread. The money we will save will be used to improve our services for our residents and local neighbourhoods across all parts of the Group”

Over the last few weeks there have been reports from around Farnham, Godalming, Witley and Milford about a male calling door to door offering wheelie bin cleaning services.

This male offers to clean bins after they have been emptied and asks for £20 to cover a number of cleanings. The male then does not return to clean bins and offers a range of excuses why he is not able to carry out the work.

Unfortunately, the male is plausible and very pleasant, and gives a home address in Horsell, Woking.

He has provided documentation stating that Waverley Borough Council has given approval for his work, which is not true as Waverley do not endorse specific traders.

He also carries a piece of paper which he claims is signed by a Surrey Police officer. This is also a fake document, as Waverley do not approve traders to operate.
