Money & Energy Saving Tips

We know its not easy being green, so we have listed below a number of tips to help get you started. They don’t cost anything, are easy to implement and all will help save you energy and money.

1. Complete free, impartial regular home energy checks with your energy supplier. We recommend annual reviews ( with your energy supplier ) to ensure your energy usuage is monitored and you are kept informed about the latest energy saving tips and advice.

2. Dry your clothes outdoors when you can or hang them up inside. If you do have to use your dryer, don’t put soaking wet clothes into it and remember to separate different fabrics. If the weather’s looking pleasant, dry your clothes on a line outside.

3. Fill up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher. One full load uses less energy than two half loads.

4. Turn off taps fully and mend any leaking taps. A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath.

5. Don’t overcharge. Unplug chargers for mobiles, iPods and Sat Navs when not in use. Most gadgets fully recharge within two hours.

6. Always use you’re washing machine at 30 degrees Heating up the water takes a large amount of energy. Modern detergents can work to get your clothes clean at lower temperatures.

7. Only boil what you need. Keep your kettle energy-friendly by only ever boiling as much water as you need. On average, at least twice the required amount of water is boiled.

8. Stop standing by. 8 – 10% of the total electricity used in your home is due to appliances left on standby. Appliances still use a large amounts of energy even in standby mode. Recent studies have shown that gadgets left on standby are responsible for 4m tonnes of excess carbon dioxide each year.

9. Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 10 degrees could cut your heating bills by up to 10% per year.

10. Switch off lights when they’re not in use. Leaving your lights on when no one is in the room is a huge waste of energy and money.
