SINCE his return to Waverley in December, PC Jim Lavery has been tackling alcohol-related disorder head on.

PC Lavery, who was the neighbourhood specialist officer for the Farncombe area before leaving for a brief spell with Lincolnshire Police, has embraced his new role as youth intervention officer back with Surrey Police.

This involves working with young people, partner agencies, schools and families towards reducing the number of young people entering the criminal justice system.

“It’s a really busy role and it requires having to deal with many agencies and an endless variety of situations,” he said.

“Myself and PCSO Trevor Ward are assisting neighbourhood teams in engaging with families and young people and offering support, where required.

“We are determined to become experts in effectively dealing with youth-related matters within Waverley.”

The focus of PC Lavery’s role is on early intervention, education and mentoring young people, in the hope that through good advice they will avoid entering the criminal justice system or being arrested.

To achieve this, he is using measures such as ‘restorative justice’, which impress on the youngsters how their actions can affect people.

“Measures include making them aware of the consequences of their actions, through letters of apology or mentoring sessions.

“We are available to assist schools in dealing with delicate situations and able to offer advice or input where required.

“We are also always on hand to assist our neighbourhood officer colleagues in dealing with youth-related matters.”

One of his next strategies is to reduce disorder in the parks and public areas of Waverley during the spring and summer.

PC Lavery works in partnership with education welfare on truancy patrols, as well as working with the Youth Justice Service’s ‘prevent and deter’ team.

He also works with Waverley Borough Council to organise the Junior Citizen scheme, offering safety awareness sessions for young people in most of the borough’s junior schools.

Joint programmes with the Royal Navy, the Send Prison visit programme and Surrey Drug and Alcohol Care are also being developed.

He added: “I am very interested in being contacted by any organisation or individual who could offer some assistance in activities which could benefit young people in steering them away from crime or antisocial behaviour.”
